The third Biennial Science and Technology (S&T) Symposium and Speak-Off Competition will take place on March 22 and 23, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

An initiative of the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), the two-day event, which is open to the public, will provide a platform for the promotion of scientific and technological research in national development.

It will also create an enabling environment for scientists, engineers and technologists to exchange information, while sharing their research findings with the general population.

Scientists and researchers will make presentations related to the symposium’s theme: Fostering Innovation through Research in Science & Technology.

Among the papers being presented are: Bio-energy in Barbados: Powering Our Future by Nikolai Holder; An Audit of the Pediatric Medical Admissions, Barbados 2013-2015, by Dr. Alok Kumar and Dr. Kandamaran Krishnamurthy; Creating Intelligent Services with Recycled Cell Phones by Shamar Ward and Dr. Mechelle Gittens; Investigating Root Causes of the Reduction in Women Completing Degrees in Computer Science and Related Fields in the Caribbean by Shenice Mason and Dr. Mechelle Gittens; and Probing Cooling Teas by Dr. Sonia Peters et al.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Harry Husbands, will deliver the feature address at the opening of the Symposium on Wednesday, March 22, at 9:00 a.m. Director of the NCST, Charles Cyrus, will give remarks.

The S&T Speak-Off competition for science students aged 15 to 18, will be held inside the conference on Thursday, March 23, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Participating schools include Combermere, Ellerslie, The St. Michael School, Christ Church Foundation, St. Leonards’ Boys’ and The Lodge School.

This section of the symposium is intended to encourage a culture of S&T research among the youth, and will see them displaying debating and research capabilities relevant to a chosen topic.

Presentations will encompass all areas of science and technology, specifically those which can be used in the further development and growth of Barbados.
