Please be more careful on the roads!
Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, made this appeal after officially opening the Black Rock Police Station Annex on Monday.
Describing the opening as a “bitter sweet moment”, Mr. Brathwaite urged members of the public to exercise more caution on the roads following Sunday night’s fatal crash in St. Philip, which claimed the life of Station Sergeant Clifford Bridgeman.
“This is unprecedented in the history of Barbados. I don’t believe that we have ever had so many road fatalities in such a short period of time… We must all be concerned,” he said.
However, he stressed that it was not just providing a legislative response, because reports indicated that recklessness was at the source of most accidents.
“I am asking all road users to exercise more care and control on the roads. We cannot emphasise enough the cost in terms of suffering, loss of human life, loss of capital, we are very concerned about it.
“The answer is not just legislative. We don’t need to have a new Act; we need to look and see where there are areas that can be improved,” Mr. Brathwaite suggested.
Meanwhile, Acting Commissioner of Police, Tyrone Griffith, described the latest death as “tragic”, and noted that it was the second sudden death faced by the Royal Barbados Police Force in less than two weeks.
“It is a very emotional time for all of us,” he said.
