The Barbados Agricultural Society has reminded members of the public, particularly farmers, that there are a number of competitions open for entry for Agrofest 2013, which takes place from February 22 to 24, in Queen’s Park, the City.

The Schools’ Kitchen Garden Competition is open to all schools – primary and secondary. This is an opportunity for students to show off the ???fruits’ of their labour and reap the rewards. In addition, householders are invited to enter the Kitchen Garden Competition. The winner will not only walk away with bragging rights but also some attractive prizes.

There are also Livestock Classes competitions for farmers in the following categories: Dairy and Beef Classes, Sheep, Goat, Market Pig Class and Market Rabbit Class. Farmers are encouraged to enter the vegetable competition in the commercial and non-commercial classes. There are prizes to be won in these categories.

Children between the ages of eight and 16 may enter Agrofest’s first ever Schools’ Renewable Energy Competition. It is in keeping with the theme of this year’s festival – Renewable Energy: Leading the charge into the future. Participants will have to carry out energy audits at their respective schools and make recommendations for more efficient energy use. There is an individual category where participants will be required to carry out home energy audits.

Entries for all competitions are available at the Agrofest Secretariat, Barbados Agricultural Society, The Grotto, Beckles Road, St. Michael or on the Barbados Agricultural Society’s website, www.basonevoice.org. Persons may also contact Agrofest’s Exhibits Co-ordinator, Saunjean Cutting, at 436-6683/6684 or email saunjean.cutting@basonevoice.org.
