Barbados is not only recognised as a regional authority on matters relating to the environment but also as a country with a global voice.

Minister of the Environment and newly-elected Vice President of the United Nations Environmental Assembly with responsibility for the Caribbean and Latin America, Dr. Denis Lowe, made this assertion during a recent interview with the Barbados Government Information Service.

Emphasising the importance of the country???s global environmental responsibility, Dr. Lowe said Barbados had made significant strides in environmental matters.

These included work conducted on the Green Economy Scoping Study; its Coastal Zone Management programmes; ongoing work to complete the Environmental Management Act and the new Waste Management Act; meeting its commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its renewable energy efforts.

???All of these will contribute to the fulfilment of our pledges in our nationally determined contributions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,??? the Minister noted.

Noting that Barbados was in the middle of its Environment Month celebrations under the theme: Living Sustainably is???Celebrating 50 Years of Environmental Stewardship, Dr. Lowe encouraged the public to continue assisting the Ministry in managing the environment.

???We expect our schools, our private sector groups and other civic organisations will be a part of the activity of the month, and we look forward to seeing you at our various activities around the island,??? he said.??He added that after hosting World Environment Day in 2014, the country continued to work locally, regionally and globally on matters related to environmental stewardship and management.

???We are fully aware that part of good environmental stewardship has to do with how we take care of our natural spaces as well as our built spaces. I am pleased that we are making progress, though in some areas not at a pace we would prefer,??? Dr. Lowe pointed out.
