Barbados could soon be receiving assistance in the area of sports from the Government of India.
Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, revealed that he recently had a bilateral meeting with his counterpart in India while attending the 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and avenues for cooperation were discussed.
"We are looking at having in place an indoor stadium facility to cater to games like badminton, table tennis and boxing and I am currently exploring that with a view to having the Government work with us to actually construct such a facility.
"But more than that, there are avenues for having our athletes being trained in India and benefiting from some of its programmes. So once I can conclude those discussions, if all goes well, we will have in place a working relationship with India that would redound to the benefit of our athletes," Mr. Lashley stated.
The Minister said he was impressed with the athletes’ showing at the games and disclosed that he would soon be meeting with the Barbados Olympic Association and national associations to plan a strategic programme for athletes.
"We have to strategise on specific areas of sports that we are going to focus on in the short term and the kind of training and exposure that we need for our athletes… We have to put in place the necessary structures to ensure that our athletes can excel," he observed. email@example.com
