Barbados is continuing on its quest to become established as the greenest economy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

And, the Green Energy Programme is one of Government???s major efforts towards attaining this goal.

This was one of the talking points raised by Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, when United Nations Representative, Stephen O???Malley, paid him a courtesy call at his office recently.

Dr. Lowe used the opportunity to speak about Government???s plans to construct a new building for the Sanitation Service Authority, a leachate treatment plant, the gas energy features of the facility and a wind-to-energy plant.??

He added that the project, which was expected to be powered by solar energy, also had the potential for job creation.

???The aim of Government is to become energy independent due to the volatility of the world oil market, and not knowing where you stand from month to month,??? the Minister said, stressing that ways to reduce the energy bill were needed.

Dr. Lowe said there were opportunities for partnerships to be formed between Government and the United Nations Development Programme in the future (UNDP).

Mr. O???Malley, also Resident Coordinator at the UNDP, indicated that he was interested in finding out how UN House could be retrofitted with alternative energy sources to reduce costs.

He added that they were also interested in following the steps Government had taken towards greening the economy as it would also be of interest to member countries in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
