Barbados will join international celebrations to honour those seafarers who have made a contribution to their countries on Saturday, June 23, during a luncheon at the Beach House in Holetown, St. James.?? It begins at noon.

Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson, will deliver remarks, followed by reflections and presentations of plaques of appreciation to the seafarers during the ceremony, which is being held in their honour.

Approximately 68 men who worked on boats, including cargo vessels, will be honoured on that day and will share their experiences of life at sea, two days ahead of the officially recognised Day of the Seafarer, which is celebrated worldwide on June 25.

The Day of the Seafarer was first celebrated in 2011 following its establishment, by a resolution adopted by the Conference of Parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers, 1978, held in Manila, Philippines, in June 2010.

The day is included in the annual list of United Nations Observances.
