When the United Nations General Assembly convenes its High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in New York later this month, Barbados will be well represented.

That assurance was given today by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, during talks with Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO)/World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative, Dr. Merle Lewis, at the Ministry’s Constitution Road headquarters.?? Dr. Lewis was at the time presenting her credentials to the Minister.

Senator McClean added that the delegation attending the meeting, which is scheduled to be held from September 19, to 20, would be made up of key health officials, as Government was committed to reducing the incidences of such diseases in this country.

Today’s discussions also focused on the linkages between health and other areas such as tourism and climate change.

Dr. Lewis, who has responsibility for Barbados and East Caribbean, pledged PAHO’s commitment to strengthening Government’s agenda on health and to responding to the needs of this country through technical or other assistance.??
