Prime Minister David Thompson????

Some four million dollars will be provided in the Estimates of the next financial year for the payment of monthly pensions to former soldiers of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF).

Word of this came from Prime Minister David Thompson last week, as he answered questions from the media during his first quarterly press conference for this year.

Mr. Thompson acknowledged that there had been both legislative and financial hiccups, but said he believed the funds being allocated "should solve the issues that members of the BDF have raised".?? ????

Last year, while delivering the feature address at the BDF’s 30th anniversary parade, the Prime Minister cautioned the soldiers that the cost of meeting the payments was substantial, "coming at a time when our economy is facing challenges not of our making."

During that speech, he also stated that given its 30 years of service, the BDF was thoroughly deserving of every benefit that the State could afford.
