Health care providers are being called on to invest in and embrace preventative health care services.

The call has come from Acting Minister of Health, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, during her feature address at fifth anniversary celebrations of the Sandy Crest Medical Centre, last Saturday.

The Senator applauded the institution for offering preventative and screening options among its range of services, although their primary mandate was to provide emergency services.

"Your tips published over the last four weeks…have embraced a wide array of preventative health messaging, from dengue fever, to alcoholism and to the benefits of daily physical activity and exercise," she observed.

Lauding the Sunset Crest-based Medical Centre for continued efforts to "give back to the community it serves", Senator Sandiford-Garner pointed out that "Government alone cannot support primary health care initiatives and I again call on the private sector, non-governmental organisations and civil society to embrace prevention as a cost-effective strategy towards improving the health and wellbeing of our citizens."

Under the theme Stay Active, Live Healthy, the celebrations included free medical and surgical consultations; diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and HIV testing; an aerobics session; and an interactive game show.
