Cambodia is counting on Barbados’ support for its candidature as a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Long Visalo, made this known to acting Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Freundel Stuart, during a courtesy call today.

Stating that Cambodia had a rich culture, Mr. Long said if his country were successful in its bid, this would be the first time that it would be serving on that prestigious Committee.

Mr. Stuart, noting that the Special Envoy had made "a great case for his country", said Barbados had to follow certain procedures, which would involve consultation with Barbadian officials at UNESCO, after which, a report would be made to Cambodia.

Cambodia is one of five Asian countries vying for the candidature on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
