China Pledges Support To Barbados??? Projects

The Government of China has reiterated its intention to provide financial assistance for a number of projects being undertaken by the Barbados government.

Chinese Ambassador, Wang Ke, gave an update on various projects during a courtesy call with Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management, Dr. David Estwick.

During the meeting at the Ministry recently, Ambassador Ke said the longstanding bilateral relationship had been further strengthened by pursuing various areas of cooperation.

She disclosed that China had been working with the Government of Barbados to support economic and social developmental projects in agriculture and water resource management. She also said that four projects – three directly related to the Ministry of Agriculture – were under consideration.

These projects Ambassador Ke said included the Centre for Food Security at the University of the West Indies, and the provision of solar equipment for the Barbados Water Authority, as well as the gymnasium.

In turn, Dr. Estwick said he was pleased that the Centre for Food Security and Entrepreneurship had been given the nod. “We think that it is very important for us to develop the technical expertise to be able to move agriculture from just primary agriculture to value-added. So, I am indeed very happy,??? he noted.

The two officials also discussed cooperation in the area of human resource development, training opportunities for Barbadians, fisheries development and investment opportunities.??Barbados and China established diplomatic ties on May 30, 1977.
