Community Department Launches New Web Site

Chief Community Development Officer, Sandra Greenidge, browses the Community Development Department’s new website with the assistance of web designer Lex Smith.

The Community Development Department (CDD) has launched a new website, which it believes will provide communities across Barbados with greater access to information.

A brief demonstration of the site was held yesterday with members of the press at the Department’s headquarters at the Warren’s Office Complex.

It features a blog, gallery, stories on the department’s activities, a calendar of events, and registration forms for its programmes. Plans are also in the pipeline for streaming audio and video of the various events held by that office.

Chief Community Development Officer, Sandra Greenidge, said the new technology would further assist the CDD in "keeping a hand on the pulse of the people and the communities".

In this way, she pointed out that the CDD would be able to engage persons fully in their activities and provide maximum benefits for their constituents.

Ms. Greenidge acknowledged that there was a challenge in providing information on the many projects offered by her department, with some 20 programmes currently under way at 30 community centres across the island.

However, she opined that the website would provide a cost-effective and user-friendly avenue for Barbadians to gather such details and interact with the CDD.

Ms. Greenidge added that the site would be a critical development tool for the Department’s Community Technology Programme which has trained some 11, 000 persons since its introduction in 2002.

"This website is going to allow persons who learned about Information Technology through our training programme to put that information to good use. It is also going to facilitate creativity and innovation in the area of technology, including website design, computer graphics and animation," she explained.

The website, which also provides a forum for feedback for visitors, can be accessed at http://www.comdev.gov.bb/.
