Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley is exploring the possibility of Barbados creating a cultural presence in Brazil during the Olympic Games. (FP)??

Barbados has been advised to stage Bajan cultural experiences around the environs of the upcoming Olympic Games, slated to be held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in 2016.

This recommendation has come from Brazilian Music Executive, Marcelo Castello Branco, as he responded to a query from Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, about the possibility of Barbados creating a cultural presence in Brazil during the Olympic Games. The discussion took place during a courtesy call today at the ministry’s headquarters at Sky Mall.

Mr.?? Lashley told the music executive that it was his wish to use the upcoming games as a platform for not only the island’s sportsmen and women but for Barbadian cultural practitioners as well.

Mr. Castello Branco, who has worked with Universal Music Brazil, said Rio De Janeiro had become a brand, adding that although the Olympic Games would be used to showcase Brazilian culture, that this should not be seen as a deterrent, but an opportunity for Barbadian artists to take advantage of the Brazilian market.??

Mr. Castello Branco suggested that it would be beneficial to capitalise on the influx of persons who would be in the South American country by hosting smaller events or outreach initiatives.????

"Everyone is looking to the Caribbean.?? Multinational companies are looking at the region more and more for talent. So, I would suggest [that] you provide a platform to help with Barbadian artistic development in the Brazilian market," he said.??

Possible cultural collaborations and exchanges between the two countries, festivals that would facilitate artistic development and the cultural landscape of Brazil, were also discussed during the meeting.??
