February is African Awareness Month, and a number of schools across the island will stage events to commemorate the period, known elsewhere as Black History Month.

Among the first to kick off the month will be Blackman and Gollop Primary at Staple Grove, Christ Church. The school’s activities start on Wednesday, February 1, at 8:45 a.m.

The theme for the month is: Retracing Our Steps: From Africa to Barbados, and this will be addressed by Estella Walcott, a parent at the school who is also a native of Sierra Leone. Additionally, there will be a variety of African choruses performed by students and teachers dressed in African garb.

Other events planned by the school include a series of displays, PowerPoint presentations and demonstrations on Wednesday, February 8; Day of the Griots on Wednesday, February 15; and African cooking demonstrations on Wednesday, February 22. Activities at the school will culminate on Tuesday, February 28, with a culture day and concert.

African Awareness Month will be celebrated at most schools until February 28, but some activities, however, will extend into March.
