FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT AND HIV COMMISSION TEAM-UP

The National HIV/AIDS Commission is teaming up with its parent ministry, the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, to provide training to participants of this year???s David Thompson Memorial Constituency Council Football Classic about HIV awareness and behavioural change.

This was announced by Minister Steve Blackett, during the launch of the tournament last week at his ministry. He pointed out that the Commission would also assist in defraying the overall expenses and would further assist in the development of the annual competition. The link was made following recommendations for the ministry to partner with another entity as a way of creating better synergies.

Mr. Blackett explained that the players and officials from the 30 teams would be trained by the staff of the National HIV/AIDS Commission with the expectation that they would transfer the information gained about HIV prevention to other team members, and eventually their communities.

???I, therefore, look forward to these positive individuals utilising the knowledge gained??? to effect behaviour change at the community level,??? he stated.

He also affirmed that players and officials would again be encouraged to identify and engage in a project with the aim of ???reviving and sustaining strong bonds in their community???.

???This is what the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Council Football Classic is all about ??? not just another football tournament, but engaging in transformational change in people???s lives,??? Mr. Blackett asserted.
