Appointments To The Wages Council
Nine persons have been appointed as members of the Wages Council for the period ending July 15, 2015.
The Independent Members are Chairman, Ulric Sealy; Deputy Chairman, Millicent Small; and Kim Tudor.
The workers??? representatives are Evette Gibson, Madeleine Blenman and Dwaine Paul, while the employer???s representatives are Siobhan Robinson-Morris, Kyrel Roach and Everton Browne.
New Addition To Southern Farmers??? Market
Patrons can look forward to a new addition to this month???s Southern Farmers Market.
The Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation???s October Southern Market, takes place on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, at the Fairy Valley Plantation House next to the DHL Building, Christ Church, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day.
On Saturday, October 26, patrons will be treated to a promotion being hosted by the Barbados Food, Wine and Rum Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Barbadian chefs will be on hand to prepare local lamb and duck; and samples will be provided. Patrons will also have the opportunity to sample wines, and enjoy food prepared with wine.
Customers may also purchase their usual southern market favorites such as fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, conkies, jams, wines, sauces, plants and craft and jewelry, among other items.
There will also be blood pressure and blood sugar checks, a schools’ educational programme and tour for schools and a play area for children.
Schools interested in participating in the Educational Programme and Tour, and farmers who would like to take part in the market are asked to contact Kelly Ann Gibson and Ian Eastman at 428-0250 by Wednesday, October 23. Admission to the market is free.
Training For Fisherfolk
The Fisheries and Markets Divisions in conjunction with The Barbados National Union of Fisherfolk Organization will host a training programme for all fish handlers operating at fish markets, as part of its annual training programme for fishe folk.
Each course will run for two days and it will take place at the Fisheries Division, Princess Alice Highway.
During the month of November, four sessions will be held for fish handlers from the Bridgetown fish market. They will take place on November 5 and 6, 12 to 13, 19 to 20, and 26 to 27. In December, two sessions will be held for fish handlers at the Berinda Cox Fish Market, Oistins, Christ Church, from December 3 to 4, and 10 to 11.
The training will highlight a number of areas including, on-board practices, onshore handling, offloading, processing, storage and distribution of fish.
The training which is ongoing and targets all stakeholders in the industry will be conducted in stages. A training schedule and list of names will be posted at each market.
All fish handlers operating at fish markets and other landing sites will be required to improve and upgrade their skills by attending this programme.
Over 200 Youth To Participate In Youth Mainstreaming Programme???s Orientation
Just over 200 persons will participate in the Youth Mainstreaming Programme???s orientation session tomorrow, Friday, October 11, at 10:00 a.m. at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP), Wildey, St. Michael.
Officials from the SJPP and the Division of Youth will address the students.
The Youth Mainstreaming Programme, a component of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, provides training and development opportunities for disadvantaged, vulnerable or unemployed youngsters.
According to Youth Development Officer, David Denny, ???We are going to be bringing persons in to learn Electrical Installation, Auto-mechanics, Auto body repairs, Care of the Elderly, Childcare Management and other technical courses. The courses will run for four months.???
Other courses under the programme are Nail Care, Cookery, Mathematics and English Language at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) level.
In addition to training, the Youth Mainstreaming Programme offers job placements, job attachments, assistance with small business development and referrals to educational institutions.
