Entry Forms Available for UDC???s Garden Competition

Those persons who received assistance from the Urban Development Commission (UDC) are being encouraged to participate in its Garden Beautification Competition and win attractive prizes in the process.

Entry forms may be obtained from UDC???s office at Bridge Street Mall, Bridgetown, or its website at www.udc.gov.bb. They must be returned to the Commission by Thursday, November 28. One form will be accepted per household.

Householders may use organic manure, composting methods and recyclable materials such as bottles and tyres, as well as natural features such as trees, rocks, and vines as backdrops in their gardens. They should give consideration to the maintenance of the gardens, which must be functional.

Prison Farm Report Still Available For Viewing

Members of the public are advised that the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Study on the proposed development to upgrade agricultural facilities at HMP Dodds Prison will be available for viewing beyond Friday, October 18.

The study may be viewed at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jones Building, Webster Business Park, Wildey; the Barbados Public Library, Independence Square; the Town and Country Planning Development Office, Block ???C???, Garrison, all in St. Michael; and the Branch Library in Six Roads, St. Philip, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

There are plans to upgrade the agricultural facilities at the Prison, to include the production of 30 types of vegetable crops on 40 acres of land, and the rearing of 18, 000 broilers, 1,000 layers, 500 pigs, 100 cattle, 300 sheep and 60 rabbits on 60 acres of land.

UWITube Update October 22

An update on Uwitube, an online teaching resource, will be presented to senior officials from the Ministry of Education, teachers from several secondary schools, and the media, next Tuesday, October 22.

The examination of UWITube???s progress to date and future plans will be shared by Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, Dr. Janak Sodha, in the Main Conference Room, Administration Building, Level 4, University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus at 10:00 a.m.

Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones, will address the event.

The UWITube initiative is a collaborative effort of the UWI, the Ministry of Education and a number of sponsors. It was launched in November 2012, with the aim of developing an online teaching and learning resource in Mathematics.

It is expected that English could be added this year, as a result of a commitment made last year to bring more subjects on board.

Additionally, teachers from the English Department of participating secondary schools will be presented with iPads to assist in developing materials for this resource.
