Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour, Sen. Arni Walters??

The Ministry of Labour will soon be raising the profile of its employment services. This should augur well for job seekers and employers who use the National Employment Bureau (NEB).

This is according to Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour, Senator Arni Walters, who said his plan was the make the services of the NEB attractive not only to persons engaged in elementary occupations and trades, but to job seekers who have qualifications from tertiary institutions and employers from other sectors.

"We will be going all out to market our services to employers so that when they go to place their ads for recruitment, the NEB would be seen as a viable option for assisting in that process," he said.

In addition, Senator Walters revealed that his ministry would be sourcing more job opportunities for Barbadians in overseas markets as officials seek to bolster the numbers for the external employment programme.

"One of the new areas we will be looking at is the cruise industry, as the liners are now recruiting pretty large numbers. They are a couple of new mega cruise liners that may come on-stream [by] late 2009 and in 2010. The employment complement for these cruisers is around two to three thousand and I think Barbados has to position itself to get maybe two to 300 persons on some of those boats," Senator Walters observed.

He added that the NEB would not neglect the local market in these difficult economic times but would continue to source employment opportunities for Barbadians here.??
