When the Ministry of Social Care re-launches the National Committee on Ageing (NCA) next Wednesday, September 10, the body will assume responsibility for making recommendations on matters relating to ageing and to the quality of life of older persons, as well as proposing and supporting related activities.

The 20-member Committee’s mandate includes identifying, monitoring and evaluating various governmental and non governmental programmes of both direct and indirect concern to older persons, and it will work with the Ministry of Social Care to ensure improvement in the quality of life of these persons. It will also review and make recommendations arising from relevant research and reports relating to the aged.

The NCA’s work also involves the recognition of the contributions of older persons and organisations catering to them; provision for the continuing education of older persons; promotion of good health and healthy lifestyles; provision for the development of cultural activities; and assistance in identifying areas of research on ageing; as well as encouraging the use of their talents and experiences.

Minister of Social Care, Dr. Denis Lowe, will address the launch, which should get under way at 3:00 p.m. at the National Assistance Board’s Headquarters, Murrell House, Country Road, St. Michael.
