Members of the public who have an appreciation for reggae music are invited to the launch of The Encyclopaedia of Reggae: The Golden Age of Roots Reggae, at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, St. Ann’s, Garrison, St. Michael, on Monday, December 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and
Youth, Celia Toppin, will deliver remarks during the launch of the encyclopaedia which contains over 500 images and features a foreword by legendary reggae drummer Sly Dunbar.
It was compiled by Dr. Mike Alleyne, a professor in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University in the United States. He has specialised in chronicling the cultural and economic history of Caribbean popular music and is a frequent lecturer around the globe on the modern impact of Caribbean music.
The resource also features Barbadian Dennis Bovell, who was a key figure in the development of the British reggae scene. Another Barbadian who influenced the British scene, guitarist Jimmy Haynes, is mentioned as well as the late Jackie Opel.
