Deputy Chair of the National Planning Committee, Lolene Rawlins, presents legionnaire, Cecil Cumberbatch, with a cheque of funds collected during the Thanksgiving Service for Older Persons, while fellow legionnaire, Cameron Grant (left), and Chairman of the National Planning Committee, Clayton Springer look on.

The Barbados Legion today received a cheque of the funds collected during the Thanksgiving Service for Older Persons, held last month at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, from the National Planning Committee, which was responsible for planning activities for Senior Citizens’ Month.

Chairman of the National Planning Committee, Clayton Springer, who spoke before the presentation of funds, said the legionnaires were selected “because the committee felt very strongly … that while all the older persons in Barbados would have made tremendous contributions to Barbados’ development, the legionnaires would have been the ones who might have put their lives on the line much more definitively than a lot of other elderly Barbadians and … was the target group that merited special favour, especially at that inaugural Thanksgiving Service”.

Legionnaire, Cecil Cumberbatch, who collected the funds on behalf of the Barbados Legion, from Deputy Chairman of the National Planning Committee, Lolene Rawlins, said that he was very grateful to the committee for remembering the group.   He thanked the committee on the group’s behalf for the “generous offering”.
