Barbadians are being urged to come out and celebrate The Importance of Literacy in Our Lives when the Barbados Association of Reading hosts a Literacy Jamboree this Saturday, October 6, featuring several activities.

A Guinness World Record Attempt of the Largest Book Exchange will take place on the day at Independence Square, The City, from 7:00 a.m. to noon. During this time, participants will enter the record area and complete a stub that records the book they have brought to exchange.

This will be followed by a Literacy Walk through the environs of Bridgetown from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Walkers will pause at the Lower Green Bus Terminal to interact with commuters, then head towards Broad Street passing the General Post Office and Jubilee Gardens. Literature will be distributed throughout the walk which ends at Heroes Square.

Following the Walk, the Literacy Lime will take place from noon until 5:00 p.m. where there will be displays of books and games at Heroes Square, The City. Students from St. Paul’s Primary School will do a dramatic presentation and the Author’s Chair – Renee Padmore will read from her various works. Rhythm poetry will be presented by George Francis, while Barbadian author Osbert McClean will read and dramatise some of his work for children.

A number of organisations including the Bajan Dyslexic Stars will display items and share information.??

Patrons will also be given the opportunity to participate in a Karaoke session.
