Meat Import Permits Are Required

Persons who are travelling this holiday season and plan to bring meat or animal products into Barbados, are reminded that they must first obtain a permit for importation from the Veterinary Services Department of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Meat and meat products in their original commercial packaging may be imported from the United States of America, Puerto Rico, Canada and the United Kingdom.?? These include fresh, frozen or chilled cuts of meat or poultry; processed meats (hams, sausages, bacon, hot dogs, hamburgers, canned hams and other meats, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, NULL, NULL, 0); and pastries containing meat filling (including meat patties, meat rolls and rotis).

Only commercially packaged, cooked poultry products may be imported from the Caribbean.

Persons planning to import headdresses, masks or decorations for holiday functions that contain feathers or other animal-derived products, are also reminded that import permits are required for entry of these products into Barbados.

These controls have been established as a result of the risk of importing diseases into Barbados through meat and meat products that can affect the livestock industry, the health and livelihood of the population and the country’s ability to trade on the international market.??
