Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Joseph Atherley
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Joseph Atherley, will lead the official Barbados delegation at CARIFESTA IX in Trinidad from Friday, September 22 to Sunday, October 1.
The other members are Deputy Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, Anthony Layne and Director of Cultural Policy and Research (ag), Marjorie Clarke. A Barbados Government Information Service team will accompany the delegation.
The theme for this year’s CARIFESTA is “Celebrating Our People: Contesting The World Stage”.
CARIFESTA, the Caribbean Festival of Creative Arts was conceived as a regional festival encompassing all the creative and artistic skills and energies of the member countries of CARICOM, the wider Caribbean, and people of the Caribbean abroad, wherever in the world they now live.
The first CARIFESTA, called CARIFESTA ’72, was held in Georgetown, Guyana in 1972. It brought together writers, artists, musicians and other creative people in a variety of performances. The audiences were not only the local people but also visitors from other Caribbean countries, the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. This has been the pattern for succeeding CARIFESTAS.
The last CARIFESTA was held in Suriname during the period August 25 to 30, 2003.
