Minister of Family, Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo

Abuse of the world’s children will take the spotlight over the next few days when the World Congress Three Against Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents takes place in Brazil.

Minister of Family, Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, will lead a delegation which includes Chairman of the Child Care Board, Maureen Graham, and Director, Joan Crawford.

The meeting will run from tomorrow, Tuesday, November 25, to Friday, November 28. Participants will look at the forms of sexual exploitation and the new picture, identify advances and gaps in the legal framework, share experiences on the implementation of inter-agency policies in fighting sexual exploitation of children and adolescents and develop strategies and goals that can be agreed upon for international cooperation.

The first world congress against commercial sexual exploitation of children took place in Sweden in 1996 and the second conference was held in 2001 in Japan.

Studies conducted over the past decade have revealed that sexual misuse of children and adolescents is increasing, with growing trafficking of children for sexual abuse and tourist exploitation, and the proliferation of paedophilia on the internet.

It is therefore felt in official circles that new efforts and strategies must be mobilised, such as the systematic and integrated approach in the policies of rights of children and adolescents.
