The Ministry of Family, Youth, Sports and the Environment is seeking to ensure that its policies are proactive and relevant to the needs and aspirations of young people, through an island-wide national youth consultation study.

This was revealed by Minister Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo, in a recent interview. Noting that the study is in the final stages of data collection, she added: “On completion, we will convene a national consultation with the young people who participated in the study, as well as the young people who had the onerous task of collecting the data.

“It is hoped that the results will not only inform Government policy but that the information will also be used by organisations and stakeholders in the youth development process.”

The Minister expressed gratitude to the young people for their commitment in collecting the data.

The survey was carried out in north, south, east and central zones, by 30 young researchers, ages 15 to 29, who are youth leaders and University of the West Indies students. A team of consultants from Jamaica trained the researchers in the techniques of Participatory Learning Assessment Research Methods.

To date, 57 groups comprising Youths In and Out of School, Youth on The Block, Youth in Children’s Homes, Youth in Trade Unions, Employed and Unemployed Youth, and Youth Incarcerated were interviewed.
