Nine students from the Barbados Community College are the latest recipients of scholarships from the Emerging Leaders of the Americas (ELAP) Scholarship Programme.

The students, who will take up studies at the St. Lawrence College in Canada are: Rahim Sandiford, Tinisha Edwards, Kai Proverbs, and Tabitha Celestine from the Fine Arts Division and Tamera Goodridge, Crystal Peterson, Tamesha Griffith, Phillip Abbott and Katrina Bacchus from the Hospitality Institute.

Commerce Student, Cindy Marshall, will join the scholarship winners at the St. Lawrence College; however she will attend as an exchange student.

Addressing the students today, during the presentation of the awards, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Harry Husbands, congratulated them on their achievement and urged them to make the most of the opportunity.

???You are ambassadors and we expect that you will represent Barbados in the finest way. That does not mean that you are not supposed to enjoy yourselves to the max. This honour that has been bestowed on you is extremely important in your personal and professional development,??? he advised.

Senator Husbands added that he was convinced, after interaction with a number of young people over the past few months that ???the vast majority of young people in Barbados are articulate, well focused and have well-defined aims???.

Registrar of the BCC and Coordinator of the Programme, Sydney Arthur, also offered his congratulations to the students. He urged them to think of themselves as leaders and to use the knowledge and experience that they will gain to contribute to the development of the Caribbean.

He advised them that leaders had four qualities – intellect, instinct, interpersonal skills and were independent minded. Mr. Arthur encouraged the students to strive to achieve those attributes.??
