Outstanding young Barbadians who are excelling in various areas in the community may now be nominated for the National Youth Awards.

Eight major awards and several special ones will be presented during the ceremony, to be held on Saturday, November 22, at the Frank Collymore Hall. They are the Phoenix Award, the Ficus Award, the Conrad Hunte Award, the Colin Hudson Award, the Bambusa Award, the Challenge Award, the Hope Award and the Banyan Award. Individuals will also be rewarded in the categories of sports, performing arts, visual arts and community service.

Nomination forms and the criteria are available at the offices of the Youth Development Programme, Division of Family, Youth and Sports, the Elsie Payne Complex; and the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme, Hincks Street, St. Michael. They may also be collected from youth commissioners and other officers within the Department of Youth.

Persons eligible for nomination must be under the age of 30 by September 30, 2008. The deadline for submission of forms is Thursday, November 13, and queries should be directed to telephone numbers 430-2914, 430-2915, 430-2916, 430-2893 or e-mailed to divyouthbarbados@gmail.com.

Giving the rationale for the National Youth Awards, Public Relations Liaison Officer in the Division of Family, Youth and Sports, Wanda Reid-Beckles, said they were aimed at highlighting and celebrating the effort, talent, commitment and diligence of the young people of Barbados. “While individuals do not look for rewards when offering their services, knowing that their work has made an impact and is appreciated really lends a boost to their commitment and continued contribution,” Mrs. Reid-Beckles stated.

The awards were introduced in 2005 and this year’s theme is Believing and Achieving Goals: Our Commitment to Success”.
