Barbadian nurses will celebrate a week of activities, from Sunday, May 10 to Saturday, May 16, under the International Council for Nurses??? theme: ???Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Care Innovations.
The week is aimed at showing appreciation for nurses and their contribution to health care in Barbados. It will see them attending a number of educational sessions where they will be informed about initiatives introduced in the profession.????
In explaining the rationale for the week, President of the Barbados Nurses Association (BNA), Paulette Drakes said: ???Nurses will seek to build positive relationships within the community, to encourage healthier lifestyles, and promote for themselves continuing education that would allow for the delivery of quality care to clients and introduce the public to their innovative practices.???
Issues related to infectious diseases (such as Influenza A H1N1 virus), disease prevention and health promotion, will also be addressed during the week.
Activities for Nurses Week will begin with a church service at the Calvary Moravian Church on Roebuck Street, St. Michael on Sunday, May 10, from 9:00 a.m.
The following day, Monday, May 11, there will be a debate on the topic ???Nurses Are Innovative In the Delivery of Health Care???, in the Auditorium of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, May 12, International Nurses??? Day or Florence Nightengale Day, health institutions will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. under the theme ???Communicate, Appreciate, Collaborate and Celebrate Your Successes???.
There will be a seminar on Wednesday, May 13, entitled ???Making Change Happen ??? From Innovation to Practice???, at the Accra Beach Hotel and Resort, from 9:00 a.m. Minister of Health, Donville Inniss, will address participants.??Sports Day will be held on Thursday, May 14, at the Psychiatric Hospital???s playing field from 8:30 a.m.
The following day, Friday, May 15, there will be a health extravaganza at Jubilee Gardens, Bridgetown. It will be held under the theme ???We Are Here To Care ??? Healthy People, Healthy Nation???, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Nurses Week will culminate on Saturday, May 16, with an Awards Dinner and Ceremony at Accra Beach Hotel and Resort, Rockley, Christ Church beginning at 6:30 p.m.
