There is still a misconception held by some Barbadians that the services offered by the Albert Cecil Graham Development Centre, formerly the Children’s Development Centre, are not free.
However, graduate teacher at the Centre, Charles Edghill, explained that the full range of services provided by the team of paediatricians, psychologists, therapists and social workers were not only top notch but free of cost to Barbadians.
He made the comments after the Centre held its first Open Day in 15 years, today at its Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael location. Mr. Edghill said the purpose of the Open Day was to dispel some of these myths, as well as to give the general public a better grasp of what was done at the Centre.
Parents and students from nearby schools viewed some of the students’ work which was on display. They also got an opportunity to see some of the teaching methods used with the physically and mentally challenged students. The Centre currently caters to over 35 students in its three sections – The Workshop, Education Unit and Day Care – who range in age from newborn to 22 years.
