Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley

This year’s Parish Ambassadors received a history lesson when they viewed Independence exhibits on display at Cave Shepherd, Broad Street, The City, last Saturday.

Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, who was also on hand to view the displays located on the ground and first floors of the department store, said such initiatives were important in bridging the gap between the young and old in society.

"I must compliment Cave Shepherd for its exhibits this morning.?? What they have done is to take us back in time to a number of the things that made many Barbadians who they are today. You have the jukking board; the old grater, and the old clothes iron that I can remember as a little boy, my mother using. We have gone beyond that stage but this is certainly still what old Barbados is about, and going back and reflecting in time is really a good opportunity for our young people and those who visit Cave Shepherd. The [Parish] Ambassadors have been quite elated and struck by the things that our grandparents used…

"Most of them are very young people and a lot of what has happened years ago, in terms of the traditions of Barbados, they may not be that familiar with…Independence is about reflection on what it took to make Barbados [what it is now]. The Ambassadors are fulfilling that role by going into communities and interacting with Barbadians who really have a story to tell. And, that story can only be told by the spoken word and that’s what the Ambassadors are reliving as they go through their preparations for the Spirit of The Nation Show," Mr. Lashley explained.

The Minister said the Spirit of the Nation Show would be "a collision of talent" where all of the Ambassadors and the Parish Independence Committees would come together after developing their parish projects.

He said Barbadians should expect a lot of rivalry, colour and excitement during the show which comes off on Saturday, November 17, at the Wildey Gymnasium, Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, St. Michael, starting at 6:00 p.m.
