Another set of trees will be planted next week, this time in St. Thomas, when the Planting Pride initiative is taken there.
The trees will be planted on Monday, February 27, at Sharon Primary School, during a brief ceremony, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
A partnership between The Productivity Council and the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat, the Planting Pride initiative has as its theme: Securing Productivity Through our Communities.
It represents a component of the National Year of Productivity, which is currently being observed to help citizens cultivate the “passion, spirit and culture” of productivity.
Productivity Officer at The Council, Jannell Arthur, said the purpose of the initiative was to highlight a different parish each month throughout the year and substantially engage communities in this productivity drive.
“We want to send the clear message that it is only through the thorough and meaningful involvement of our communities in this critical undertaking that we will attain productivity growth in Barbados,” Ms. Arthur stated.
She pointed out that the message would be taken to businesses, schools, individuals, churches, and other community organisations in those parishes, in an effort to place their approaches to productivity improvement and the practice of productive behaviours in the spotlight.
Two trees will be planted in each parish, in the first instance, and the goal is to have those involved in the community pool their resources to ensure that the trees reach maturity.
Once this is done, Ms. Arthur stated, those involved would witness the “fruit of their labour, which is ultimately what productivity stands for – how well you manage and utilise your resources to achieve your goals and objectives”.
The other key stakeholders in the Planting Pride initiative are: the National Conservation Commission, the National Botanical Gardens and the Soil Conservation Commission. They will provide trees and other technical guidance to successfully execute the programme.
