The Barbados Postal Service will join global celebrations to mark World Post Day, celebrated annually on October 9, with a month of activities.

These activities commence on Friday, October 7, when the General Post Office (GPO) at Cheapside, St. Michael, opens its doors to the public during a Customer Appreciation Day in the Jackie Opel Amphitheatre, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Persons visiting the GPO on that day will have access to health tests and product sampling, along with a craft and culinary exhibition put on by postal staff.

On Sunday, October 9, World Post Day, the postal family will come together and worship at the St. Peter Anglican Church, Speightstown, St. Peter, at 9:30 a.m.

Members of the public are invited to attend a lecture entitled: Write Me a Letter Soon and I’ll Be Homeward Bound: Historical Vignettes of the Barbados Post Office, on Tuesday, October 11, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 7:00 p.m. It will be delivered by Professor Pedro Welch.

The lecture is free, but admission will be by ticket only. Persons interested in attending should contact Rotchell Gibbons at 426-1383/436-4800, extension 3262/3259, or via email at pmg@bps.bb.

The curtain will come down on the month of activities with the annual fun walk on Sunday, October 23. This year’s walk will leave the Christ Church Post Office, Oistins, Christ Church, at 3:00 p.m.

Walkers will move along Oistins Road, on to Oistins Hill, proceed along Gall Hill, Lodge Road and Newton, before turning on to the highway. They will then make their way to the junction at Providence before travelling down Thornbury Hill and back to the Christ Church Post Office.

Members of the public are invited to participate.
