"Effective readers are effective people".??

This view was posited by Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development Joy Gittens, as she addressed a church service today to mark the beginning of Education Month, at the Western Light Church of the Nazarene.

Ms. Gittens encouraged those school children present to read more, noting that "successful people always read more than the average person" and that "reading opens the door of knowledge".

The Education Official also said that the theme for the month was "Reading Opens the World", adding that it was one that she would like promoted, not only in the Ministry and schools, but throughout Barbados.

The Senior Education Officer stated that her Ministry had designated Wednesday, October 14, as "Give a Book Day" and urged persons to buy a book for someone, present books to a school or exchange books with a friend, as a way to encourage and stimulate reading.
