The National Senior Games present living proof of the undeniable benefits of a physically active lifestyle.
Minister of Social Care, Steven Blackett, shared this view this morning, while speaking at the launch of the 16th hosting of the National Senior Games, at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, Paradise Park, Cave Hill, St. Michael.
Mr. Blackett continued: “It is no secret therefore why our citizens are living longer and continuing to be productively involved in numerous capacities of social and economic development at the various levels.”
He said the games continue to be the most permanent fixture on the calendar for senior athletes, as it also provides them with the opportunity to attend the annual Huntsman World Senior Games, held in Utah, bringing recognition to themselves as well as the island.
However, Mr. Blackett explained that the event represented more than wholesome entertainment for spectators and financial benefits for community vendors and small businesses.
“Our reasons for the high acclaim of this national event relates to the tremendous community spirit that it engenders and the acceptance of our seniors as significant contributors to our country’s national development, along with the clear demonstration of our appreciation for their various contributions,” he shared with those gathered.

The Social Care Minister commended all individuals and organisations that have contributed in the past, and continue to contribute towards the hosting of the annual senior games.
He also revealed that several changes would take effect this year “in the interest of the athletes’ best performance and smooth execution of the games”.
These changes include a new route for the 5k Road Race, which will now begin at the Stansfeld Scott building, located on the Spring Garden Highway; as well as a five-event limit for each athlete.
The games will officially commence on Monday, April 24, with archery, dominoes and road tennis, and will culminate with the Track and Field Finals, which will be held on Whit Monday, June 5, at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.
Registration forms are now available at the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, and the Department of Constituency Empowerment, both located at the Warrens Office complex, Warrens, St. Michael; Sports and Games, Corner of James and Roebuck Street, Bridgetown; as well as the National Assistance Board, Murrell House, Country Road, St. Michael.
