Young people between the ages of eight and 18, and who are enrolled in a registered educational institution, are invited to take part in a photo-essay competition hosted by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD).

They are invited to submit entries on one of the topics – Why is the environment important to us? How can we play our part in protecting the environment? or What has Barbados done, or is doing to protect the environment?

Persons can enter in the eight to 11; 12 to 15; or 16 to 18 age groups. Entrants should not have passed their 19th birthday by the entry deadline.

Each photo-essay submitted should comprise a series of five images that express the candidate’s view on the topic of their choice, and have a summary not exceeding 50 words, which clearly expresses the main message of the set of images. The candidate must be the owner of the submitted images.

All entries, accompanied by an entry form and images, should be submitted via email to snapit2016@gmail.com no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7. Click on the following links to download Entry forms, competition rules and the competition poster.

Only one digital image file will be accepted. The resolution for each of these files should be suitable for viewing on a standard computer screen (1024×768 pixels; 100 ppi or better) and JPG image files no larger than 5MB each. Digital image files should also follow the format: Candidate’s last name, underscore, candidate’s first name, underscore, the topic, underscore image number.

The first prize in the eight to 11 year age category is a camera and tablet, while the second place winner will receive a tablet and P&S camera. A trip for two on the Atlantis Submarine and a P&S camera will be awarded to the person in third place.

In the 12 to 15 year age group, the first prize winner will take home a SLR camera and tablet; the second prize will consist of a tablet and P&S camera; and the third prize an Island Safari tour for two (on land only) and a P&S camera.

The 16 to 18 year age category will see the finalists receiving a SLR camera and tablet for the first prize; a tablet and P&S camera for the second prize; and an Island Safari tour for two (land and sea) and a P&S camera for the third prize.

Successful schools in each category will receive a voucher of $500 for the first prize; $400 for the second prize; and $300 for the third prize. All entrants will also receive a Certificate of Participation.
