As part of its efforts to commemorate the life and times of the National Hero whose name it bears, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic will hold a service of thanksgiving at the St. Mary???s Anglican Church on Sunday, September 20.

The event, which begins at 8:45 a.m., will be followed immediately by a wreath laying ceremony in the church yard, at the tomb of The Right Excellent Samuel Jackman Prescod.

Born in 1806, Samuel Jackman Prescod fought for improvements in the conditions of free coloured people as well as the liberation of all slaves.

From an early age, he set about to unite the masses – coloured, Blacks and Poor Whites – into a coalition of the oppressed and to agitate for their enfranchisement.??The National Hero???s courageous feats continued in the House of Assembly for nearly 20 years, where he vehemently opposed class legislation and constantly defended the welfare and rights of the underprivileged. He died on September 26, 1871, at the age of 65, and was buried at St. Mary???s.
