I received, with very deep regret , the sad news of the passing of Nelson Mandela, former President of the Republic of South Africa and world famous freedom fighter.

For some time now we all knew that failing health had made serious incursions on both his energies and his mobility, and that this light which has long brightened the global firmament would sooner or later flicker to extinction.

The world is now a poorer and a darker place for his passing.

We in Barbados share the grief and sense of loss which have suddenly enveloped not only his native South Africa but the world of which he was so unique and so distinguished a citizen.

Over the next few weeks we will all have cause to reflect on a life courageously lived and selflessly given in the service of the freedom of all mankind, and we will have occasion too, to pay tribute to his memory.

May He whose glory the heavens declare extend to Nelson Mandela that warm embrace reserved for those who have fought the good fight, finished their course, and kept the faith, and may light perpetual shine upon him.

On behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I should like to extend heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of South Africa, his wife Gra??a, former wife Winnie, and all others bereaved by his passing.

May he rest in peace.
