(Barbados Revenue Authority)

Registration for the Barbados Revenue Authority’s (BRA) TAMIS online system is about to receive a major push with a new project being rolled out in conjunction with the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology (MIST).

The pilot, which is under MIST’s Digital Acceleration Ambassador Programme, will see students who are currently receiving a free tertiary education giving back or volunteering their time to register local taxpayers on the new system.

Students will be selected from institutions such as the Barbados Community College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology, and the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus.

In July this year, in a Ministerial address in the House of Assembly, Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Santia Bradshaw, said that tertiary students benefiting from free tuition from September would have to contribute to the development of social capital by giving back a minimum of 100 hours, for part-time students, and 150 hours for full-time students in approved community service per year.

Using the help of the student volunteers, a number of tax registration clinics will be established across the island to assist citizens in their online tax registration efforts. It is anticipated that community centres and libraries across the island would be used as the venues for the clinics.

The Ministry hopes that this initiative will increase tax compliance, while providing a medium for students to volunteer their services and increase the digital intelligence of a segment of the population.  Those students involved in the project will have the hours that they contribute, recorded. Additionally, feedback on their performance will also be documented.
