Statistics derived from the Continuous Household Labour Force Survey indicated that the rate of unemployment for the fourth quarter (October to December) of 2011 stood at a provisional 10.2 per cent. The unemployment rate among males stood at 8.6 per cent and 11.7 per cent among females.

In the review period, there were 142,200 persons in the labour force, consisting of 72,300 males and 69,900 females. The number of persons employed in the labour force totalled 127,800 persons, some 66,000 males and 61,700 females. The number of persons not actively looking for work, hence excluded from the labour force was 71,600 persons. A total of 28,800 males and 42,700 females were excluded from the labour force. The Labour Force participation rate stood at 66.5 per cent with participation among males at 71.4 per cent and 62.0 per cent among females.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, the Wholesale and Retail Trade sector generated jobs for the largest number of persons, employing 20,300 persons, while the Construction, Mining & Quarrying Sector employed 15,800 persons. The Accommodation & Food Services Sector employed 13,700 persons, while the Manufacturing sector generated employment for 9,600 persons. The Public Administration & Defence and the Administrative Support employed 8,600 persons and 7,600 persons respectively. There were 7,400 persons employed in the Transport & Storage sector and 7,000 persons were employed in the Education sector. The "Other Groups" category generated employment for 6,600 persons while the Human Health & Social Work sector generated employment for 6,500 persons.

During the review period, the number of persons employed in the Finance & Insurance sector stood at 4,800 persons. The Activities of Households as Employers generated employment for 4,700 persons while the "Other Services" sector employed 4,500 persons. Employment in the Professional, Scientific & Technical Services was recorded at 4,200 persons while employment numbers in the Electrical, Gas, Steam, Water & Air Conditioning Supply sector stood at 3,200 persons. The Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector generated employment for 3,100 persons.
