The national logo and motto competitions for the proposed Caribbean Association of Professional Statisticians (CAPS) have been won by Iesha Brathwaite and Zerayaicob Yaicob.

Eleven-year-old Zerayaicob won the motto competition and received $500 from the Barbados Statistical Service, while Ms. Brathwaite, who is a member of the family company Pixelprojekts, was awarded $1,500, for winning the logo competition. They received their prizes earlier this week.

The winning national submissions will be forwarded to the CARICOM Secretariat by July 31, 2013, for the regional part of the competition. The overall winner will be announced later this year at the 38th Meeting of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians.

Zerayaicob, who recently wrote this year???s Barbados Secondary Schools??? Entrance Examination and emerged as the top male student in the island, said he was ???pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed??? to learn that he had won. He added that he was ???excited??? that his motto would be sent on for the regional leg of the competition and declared that he ???is now eagerly anticipating the outcome of this contest???.??

Ms. Brathwaite, who has been described as a ???creative, imaginative, multi-disciplinary artist with a drive for pixel perfection???, is also happy with her win.

CAPS will be created to advance official and academic statistics and to support evidence-based decision-making at all levels. It is believed that the establishment of such a regional association would positively impact the harmonisation process within the region.
