Workshops For Hazard Awareness Month

As part of the activities to mark Tsunami and Earthquake Smart Month, a team from the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) will conduct a series of workshops in primary and secondary schools across Barbados.

The SRC team will join members of the Technical Standing Committee on Coastal Hazards (TSCCH) in executing the workshops under the theme: Come On Barbados: Let???s Team Up and Combat the Impacts of Coastal Hazards.

The first of these workshops comes off on Monday, March 16, when the team will visit the Alma Parris Secondary School, in Major Walk, Speightstown, St. Peter, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Later that day, the team will venture to The Alexandra School, in Queen???s Street, Speightstown, St. Peter, for another workshop which begins at 1:00 p.m.

Still in St. Peter, the team will visit Leacock???s Private School, in Farm Road, on Tuesday, March 17, at 10:00 a.m., and later Roland Edwards Primary School in Battalleys, from 1:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 18, the team will split in two, with one group visiting St. Bernard???s Primary, Lammings, St. Joseph, and the other, Chalky Mount Primary, Chalky Mount, St. Andrew, simultaneously at 10:00 a.m. Later in the day, they will visit The Alleyne School in Belleplaine, St. Andrew, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Students at the Half Moon Fort Primary School in Half Moon Fort, St. Lucy, will get their opportunity to learn about earthquakes and tsunamis on Thursday, March 19, when the SRC team and members of the TSCCH visit them at 10:00 a.m.

That same day from 1:00 p.m., the group will move over to the A. DaCosta Edwards Primary School in Belleplaine, St. Andrew, for another presentation.??The final student workshop will be conducted on Friday, March 20, at the St. Lawrence Primary School, St. Lawrence, Christ Church, from 9:00 a.m. All presentations are expected to last 90 minutes.
