As World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed around the world tomorrow, Friday, June 15, the National Assistance Board (NAB) will play its part in ensuring that Barbadians are aware of the plight of our senior citizens.

To this end, the Board will host an event at Jubilee Gardens in the City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., during which the public will have an opportunity to learn more about the work of the various organisations which provide assistance to the elderly. These include: the Barbados Association of Retired Persons; the NAB Recreational Activity Centre; the Alzheimer’s Association of Barbados; the Welfare Department; the Royal Barbados Police Force; and the Elder Care Association.

One highlight of the day will be the presentation of the Draft Elder Abuse Protocol to Minister of Social Care, Steve Blackett. This document will speak to the task of the reporting, management and investigation of elder abuse.

A Housing Report, which discusses the challenge of housing for the elderly, will also be presented.
