Barbadians are being urged to join the global celebrations for World Environment Day 2014 through social media pledges.

The Barbados Government Information Service is teaming up with the Ministry of the Environment and Drainage, to encourage members of the public to take ???selfies??? pledging to promote good environmental practices on World Environment Day celebrated on Thursday, June 5, and beyond.

Individuals are encouraged to upload their pledges during the week-long global celebrations, which run from Sunday, June 1, until Saturday, June 7.??

The pictures may be posted to the Barbados Government Information Service???s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/gisbarbados, or uploaded to Instagram at #gisbarbados.??All posts should read: ???On this World Environment Day 2014, I pledge to???.???, and then indicate the pledge being carried out.

There are 21 pledges – buy local; eat local; grow local; use a reusable bag for shopping; using less packaging; carpooling; using public transportation; walking; planting a tree; repairing leaky faucets; using a bucket to wash the car; turning the shower off while soaping; using a cup of water to brush teeth; starting a recycling club at home or at work; conducting a home energy audit; buying energy efficient appliances and fixtures; maintaining tyre pressure in vehicle tyres; beach clean-ups; learning to swim; participating in a nature or heritage hike and wearing green on World Environment Day on Thursday, June 5.

The global celebrations are being held under the theme: Small Island Developing States and Climate Change, and the slogan is Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level.
