The National Conservation Commission’s (NCC) "Capacity Building For Youth In Sustainable Land Management" project, more commonly known as the "Tree for Every Child" project, continues in earnest this weekend.

According to the NCC’s Technical Officer, Ryan Braithwaite, beginning at 9:00 a.m. this Saturday, July 4, approximately 1,200 trees are expected to be planted along the island’s East Coast, in the area adjacent to the Barclays Park.

Minister of Agriculture, Senator Haynesley Benn: Chairman of the National Conservation Commission, Tyrone Lowe; NCC staff and some 300 members of the Barbados 4H Foundation will participate in the tree planting exercise.

In giving some background to the project, Mr. Braithwaite said the exercise is in keeping with the planting phase of the four-year project, which has as its goal the propagation and planting of approximately 80,000 trees across the island.

Its over-arching goal is to contribute to sustainable land management in Barbados through reforestation, by creating a sense of awareness, ownership and appreciation for the natural environment through youth empowerment. It also seeks to increase the variety of vegetation on the island, combat soil erosion and improve the island’s natural aesthetics.
