"There is no doubt that energy innovation has an important role to play in the development of a sustainable Barbados." This was a view shared this morning by Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy, Jehu Wiltshire, as he highlighted ???words of wisdom’ from some of the winning pieces from the Energy Week 2012 colouring, poster and essay competitions.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony held at the Barbados Light and Power headquarters, Bay Street, Mr. Wiltshire expressed satisfaction with the quality of the entries which were submitted under the theme Energy: The Engine of the Economy.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary explained that "we recognize that the youth of Barbados will bear the responsibility for the creation of a sustainable energy mix in the future.?? We wanted to begin the process of critical thought among young people on the matters that presently abound in the energy sector.?? Among these issues, we were particularly keen to hear the opinion of the youth on how they saw the issue of responsible energy use and the changing face of electricity."
The Colouring Competition, for five to seven year olds, was won by Joshua Valere of St. Angela’s Primary, while the Poster Competiton, for children ages eight to 11, saw Jaylan Batson of The Rock Christian School take first place.?? The two essay competitions for eight to 11-year-olds were won by Trinity Academy’s Aidan Edwards and Kezia Burnett; while the essay competitions for 1st to 3rd form and 4th and 5th forms were won by Queen’s College students, Stacia Martindale and Shaddiah Hinds.?? Prizes included tours, iPads, kindles and movie tickets.
