A total of 22 schools are set to receive substantial upgrades during the upcoming summer vacation.

According to Acting Project Manager of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development’s Education Project Implementation Unit (EPIU), Richard Harrison, "next month’s programme is part of the Ministry’s annual upgrade which will address specific problems at the island’s schools".

Mr. Harrison disclosed that this year’s budget was approximately BDS $1.2 million, which he said was slightly above last year’s. He outlined that projects to be undertaken during the 2009 Domestic Summer Programme included roof repairs, exterior painting, construction of prefab buildings, as well as minor adjustments to doors, ceilings and bathroom facilities.

Deacons and Grantley Prescod Primary Schools will be the location of two new prefab units, while two additional ones will be relocated to the St. Philip and St. Giles Primary Schools, respectively. Mr. Harrison pointed out that the installation of these structures would provide much needed additional classroom space for the schools.

The Acting Project Manager added that work was set to commence "at the very beginning of the summer vacation" to ensure that projects were completed at the start of the new school term, in September.
