School children are being encouraged to take the chance to gather information on recycling and alternative energy projects when this year???s annual 4R???s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover) Fair comes off on Saturday, February 8, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Waste Management Coordinator with the Solid Waste Project Unit, Thora Lorde, said this year???s fair was a ???good place??? for children who need information on projects and to gather information.
She explained that the annual event will feature live presentations on various environmental matters in addition to the 15 booths on display.
Mrs. Lorde said this year???s fair would also feature the launch of the Green Smiles CD, which is designed to teach young children about proper waste management practices and discourage them from engaging in negative practices such as littering.
???We want children to get away from negative practices like littering which could have harmful effects on land, gully and marine ecosystems,??? she said, while adding that there will also be a children???s play area with Waste Buster.
Businesses too, will have an opportunity to benefit from this year???s 4R???s Fair as opportunities will be provided for them to find out more about recycling and reducing their operation costs.
???The Fair will show businesses how to reduce the use of paper, and other alternatives they may adopt as a part of the process,??? Mrs. Lorde said, adding: ???These practices can have harmful efforts on the land, gullies and marine ecosystems.???
She further noted that the continued thrust to encourage homeowners and communities to become involved in recycling would also be emphasised at the annual event, with some being able to benefit from the raffling of compost bins.
This year???s event will feature exhibits from a number of companies including the Sanitation Service Authority, Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre, B???s Recycling, and the Future Centre Trust.
The National Conservation Commission will also hold a plant sale, while the Botanical Gardens is expected to do a presentation from 11:00 a.m. until 12.00 p.m.
