Eighty young people recently concluded their training at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) under the Next Steps Training Initiative Programme (NSTI).

They received training across five disciplines: Photovoltaic Installation; Sound Engineering; Basic Car Maintenance for Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electric Vehicles; Care of the Elderly, and Child Care and Nursery Management.

At the closing session with the students, Programme Coordinator, David Denny, expressed the hope that each one of them would ‘move forward in a positive way’, whether that be with a job attachment, continuation of studies or applying to the Ministry for small pieces of equipment that would assist them in starting their own business.

The NSTI, formerly the Youth Mainstreaming Programme, seeks to empower young Barbadians aged 16 to 35, by developing the necessary skills they need to be successful in their careers.

This is done through partnerships with other recognised educational institutions like the SJPI, the Barbados Community College (Hospitality Institute) and the Barbados Vocational Training Board.

Another training session will be held in January 2022, and persons interested in participating in any of the several programmes offered under the Next Steps Training Initiative are encouraged to contact the Ministry for more information at telephone number 535-3835.
